Walking/Hiking Trails

James Madison’s Montpelier Hiking Trails

Located less than a mile from the Inn you can choose from the 3.5 mile Montpelier Loop Trail, the 2.5 mile Landmark Forest Trail, the 3.9 Mile Montpelier-Grelen Trail, the 1 mile Montpelier Civil War Encampment Trail. Their website has complete maps for each.

Shenandoah National Park

Hiking in the park is wonderful any time of the year and there are over 500 miles of trails to choose from.  It is a scenic 35 minute drive from the Inn and there are plenty of places off the beaten path.  Some of our favorites are: White Oak Canyon, Old Rag Mountain, Miller’s Head, and Passamaquoddy Trail Loop.  White Oak Canyon and Old Rag Mountain are accessible from the bottom of the mountains.

Rivanna Trails

Would you like to take a walk around Charlottesville. Literally, you can do just that because this trail circumnavigates the entire city with a number of miles along the Rivanna River. You will need to decide where to start and in what direction you want to go…clockwise or counterclockwise.   They have an app you can load to help you make these type of decisions.

Liberty Mills Corn Maze

Virginia’s Largest Corn Maze, 25 acres, is divided into four (4) separate trails. The first trail takes about 30 minutes to find all our story stations and navigate the paths. The medium level maze offers great trivia based on the maze theme for the year and navigation challenges and takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour to complete. The third level? It may take you 2-3 hours, but the satisfaction of finding all 21 hole punches and finding your way out is absolutely farm-tastic!  The fourth level is the labyrinth at the top of the maze. No maps here to guide you, you are on your own!

Golf

Meadows Farm Golf Course

The 180-acre course was designed by Bill Ward, Jr. – an up-and-coming designer with six golf courses to his credit. Designing 27 holes, Ward made each one with a distinct character to offer a wide range of challenges and experiences. Maximum effort has been put into individualizing each hole so that the golfer will feel as if he/she has played 27 different courses rather than playing the same hole 27 times. Each hole has a story to tell. Ward has brought some new ideas to Virginia golf, taking elements from major courses in Florida and California. There are elevated tees, bounce bunkers, rock and railroad tie walls in and around the greens, bunkers waiting to catch an errant shot, an island green, a stunning waterfall Par 3, and seven water crossings.

The signature hole is a par 6, and when played from the championship tee is 841 yards. This is recognized by the Guinness’ Book of World Records as “The Longest Golf Hole in the United States.” The design gives every level of golfer an option on how to play the hole – while challenging for the golf pro and low-handicapper, it offers a fair test for the high-handicapper.  You will always remember you played “The Longest!”

Spring Creek Golf Course

Spring Creek Golf Club is a nationally recognized golf course located only minutes from Charlottesville, Virginia and the Inn at Westwood Farm.  Bent grass fairways, beautiful greens and the natural contour of the land help make Spring Creek a unique, exceptional golfing experience. Golf Digest has rated Spring Creek #55 on its 2015-16 America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses List!

Golfadvisor.com just released it’s Top 100 courses based on reviews and Spring Creek came in at number 5!  It is in the same league as St. Andrews and Pebble Beach.
